Interdisciplinary Archaeological and Archaeometric Research Group of Pázmány Péter Catholic University (2019–2023)
Due to its geopolitical position, Hungary and the Carpathian Basin have always served as a bridge between East and West. The historical past of the region has been fundamentally shaped by its Eurasian background and network of connections. Throughout history, Hungary has played an active role in the exchange of cultural knowledge and economic goods, although the historical and archaeological background of this process has not yet been fully explored.
For two decades, researchers of the Institute of Archaeology at Pázmány Péter Catholic University have carried out internationally recognized research in several key eastern countries. Building on valuable research concessions, contracted projects, and prior international publications, the Institute established an interdisciplinary archaeological research group within the framework of the Thematic Excellence Program.
The research group maintains close cooperation with all relevant Hungarian professional workshops and institutions. Its work is directly integrated into higher education, involving MA and PhD students, thereby contributing to the training of future specialists in Hungary.
The results of the “Our Eastern Heritage” research group are relevant both for Hungarian and international historical and archaeological scholarship. Moreover, through scientific collaboration with countries such as Russia, Turkey, Syria, Ukraine, and Moldova, the program also contributes to Hungary’s foreign relations, supporting diplomatic and regional economic cooperation.
The principal investigators of the research group are internationally recognized experts in their respective fields and carry out their work in collaboration with foreign specialists within an international framework.
